A memorial is a special building or statue. Memorials honor someone who died. The Lincoln Memorial honors President Abraham Lincoln. It is located in Washington, DC. The memorial took many years to build. Plans for the memorial were started in 1867. Workers placed the first block of stone in 1914. In 1917, work on the memorial slowed down. This was because many workers left to fight in World War I. In 1919, 28 big pieces of stone were put together. These pieces made a huge statue of Lincoln. The Lincoln Memorial was finally finished in 1922.
What caused work on the memorial to slow down in 1917?
