Clarissa and the Chickens

  1. One morning, as Clarissa was playing near the family’s chicken coop, something unusual happened.
  2. “Cluck, cluck, cluck-cakes," clucked one of the chickens from inside the coop.
  3. Clarissa pushed her face against the wire.
  1. “You want cupcakes?” she whispered to the hen facing her.
  2. “Cluck, cluck, cluck-cakes. Cluck, cluck, cluck-cakes," the hen responded, nodding its head up and down.
  3. Clarissa nodded back. “I understand," she said, smiling. “I will get you cupcakes!”

  1. Later that afternoon, Clarissa watched as her big sister started gathering everything they needed to start baking.
  2. I wonder what flavor cupcakes chickens like, Clarissa thought. I’d better go ask.
  3. Clarissa approached the coop, but before she could even ask, the chickens were flapping and pecking at the ground. There, scratched into the dirt, was a single word—Worm.
  4. “Hmm," said Clarissa. “Worm cupcakes. Sounds gross to me, but okay.” She dug around in the dirt until she’d collected several fat, juicy worms.
  5. “Mmm, delicious!” she said, holding them up for the chickens to see. “Worm cupcakes, coming up!”
