Lesson 43: Multiplying and dividing with powers of 10

# Multiplying and dividing by powers of 10

Learn about the patterns when multiplying or dividing numbers by powers of 10. Multiplying shifts digits to the left, while dividing shifts them to the right. The exponent determines the number of places digits shift.

• Wha would be the answer if it was 624 divided by blank equals 62.4
• 624 ÷ 10 = 62.4
It's the same idea as multiplication, but backwards.
To check my answer you can do:
62.4 x 10 = ?
• For the people that are still confused:
Multiplication:
10 x 10 = 100
100 x 10 = 1000 or 10 x 10 x 10 = 1000

Division:
1000 / 10 = 100
100 / 10 = 10
10 / 10 = 1

Hope this helps
• it's like when multiplying we shift the decimal point to the right as many times as our zeros
and when we divide we shift the decimal point to the left as many times as the zeros
• Thanks Sal for explaining, but I was wondering if you could do a problem on bigger decimals? Or give a more clear explanation? Let me give some examples.

1. 124.95/10.
so to solve this problem we can break it up into steps. First you have to figure out what ten to the power of two means. To do that you multiply 10x10 and that equals 100. So that would be 124.95/100. So in order to do that you have to put it in a division problem and divide. After that your answer should be 1.2495.

If my answer doesn't explain correctly, I’m sorry! I hope I make you understand if you don’t.
• what would the answer be if 60024 was divided by blank and equals 600.24 and then multiplied it by 2 again
• To get from 60024 to 600.24, we move the decimal point 2 places to the left.

Moving 2 places to the left is the same as dividing by 100.

So 60024 divided by 100 is 600.24. So the number that goes in the blank is 100.
• I don't get it help me!
• The power, (the tiny number on top of the '10') is how many zeros the answer will have. So, if you were to solve the equation 10^2, you would know the answer would have 2 zeros, so, the answer is 100. The answer will always start with 1.
• i sill kind of don't under stand.
• The pattern for multiplying or dividing by a power of 10 is simple. When we multiply by a power of 10 (such as 10, 100, 1000, 10000, etc.), the number of digit zeros in the power of 10 is the number of places we move the decimal point to the right. The same is true when we divide by a power of 10, except that we move the decimal point to the left instead of right.

Have a blessed, wonderful day!
