Lesson 1: Unit 7 Overview | 7.0WATCH: Unit 7 Overview
The grandsons of those who fought in the First World War went back to war only a few decades later, in an even more devastating and widespread conflict, and one in which great violence was aimed at civilian populations. How did this happen? Was it a result of fascism and authoritarianism—a turn away from the democratic values of the Long Nineteenth Century? Or was it due to the growth of nationalism and racism? Or because of the Great Depression? Or as a result of the uncertain results of the First World War?

- What were some horrors of the Second World War that resulted from this extreme nationalism and from authoritarianism?(2 votes)
- Well, the war itself, the Holocaust, the list goes on and on(1 vote)
- How come we talk about Nazi war crimes more than Japanese war crimes, even though Japanese war crimes were considerably worse then the Nazi's?(1 vote)
- Until very recently, the Western World (America, Europe) dominated the world culturally, and so much of the discourse about World War II and education in western schools focused on what the west held most important. Germany was more ethnically and culturally close to the US and rest of Europe, so its WWII atrocities hit harder than those of the Japanese, regardless of who was actually more brutal. Because of the greater shock value, we emphasized the holocaust and nazism more.
Also, some suggest that America wanted to use Japan as an ally during the Cold War, so some details about its war crimes weren't as widely publicized as that of Germany to reassure its allies.(3 votes)
- thats horrible! why did people go so far for something so stupid? i 0 faith in humanity.(1 vote)
