Milton Hershey

  1. Today I am telling you about an amazing man named Milton Hershey. Not only did Milton invent Hershey’s chocolate bar, he also started a school for homeless boys, created an amusement park, and more! It’s hard to believe that Milton started out as a poor kid that had to leave school to go to work, but it’s true.
  2. Milton Hershey was born in 1857 in Pennsylvania, his family didn’t have much money, so after fourth grade Milton went to work. He didn’t like his first job, but he did like his second one. It was an apprenticeship with a candymaker. Milton learned how to make hard candies, taffy, and caramels.
  3. Which Milton was 19 he borrowed money to start his own candy company. Unfortunately, he didn’t sell enough candy to pay back his loan, so his business failed. A lot of people probably can have thrown in the towel, but not Milton! He learned more about candy and started another company, but that one failed to.
  4. Do you think Milton was thru with candy making? Not yet. He started another business—this time making only caramels. He took everything he learned from his past failures and put them into the caramel company. His hard work. Milton’s caramel company was a success, he sold it for a lot of money.
  5. Next, Milton decided to start in the chocolate business. At which time, chocolate in the United States was only for rich people because it was handmade and expensive. Plus, Milton didn’t think it tasted all that good. Milton experimented with different chocolate recipes after he found one that was perfect. He also developed an efficient way to mass-produce his chocolate flat delicious bars.
  6. Milton was so successful that he built a big factory and a town for his workers. He added an amusement park, golf courses, and more. Since Milton and his wife could not have children, he started a school for homeless boys. Milton became a success because he worked hard and never gave up.
