Dispersion of light

The central concept in this lesson is that different colours of light refract differently. Because of this, a white beam of light splits into its component colours inside a prism. We need to recall how that happens, draw a ray diagram to illustrate it, and remember the order of colours in which white light splits.

Q4. How did Newton show that the white light of the sun contains seven colours using two identical prisms? Draw a ray diagram to show the path of light when two identical glass prisms are arranged together in inverted position with respect to each other and a narrow beam of white light is allowed to fall obliquely on one of the faces of the first prism.

- Dispersion of light occurs when white light is separated into its different constituent colors because of refraction and Snell's law. The glass slab's refractive index is different to that of the prism and so it doesn't split the light into spectrum. However, if you carefully observe a laser passing through a glass slab, you would observe one or two different colors of light. So in reality, the glass slab does spilt white light but only in colours that aren't visible to the human eye (except a few given colors which are visible).(0 votes)
