LearnStorm Weekly Activity content roadmap

Weekly Activity #1: The Science Behind Learning
This activity is designed to get learners thinking about their brain as something that is flexible and malleable, something they can change over time with practice and effort. Learners are asked to imagine what’s happening in their brain when they struggle and to share their own creative representation. Encourage learners to be creative! This is fun to do as a group art project.
Weekly Activity #2: Recognizing and Conquering the Fixed Mindset
In this week’s activity, learners are presented with the idea that, even though our brains are built to learn and grow, that doesn’t mean learning or becoming good at something is easy. We’ll cover fixed mindset and growth mindset definitions and offer a strategy for conquering the fixed mindset. Learners will have the chance to practice growth mindset phrases to use when learning, especially when they're struggling.
Weekly Activity #3: Set a Goal & Plan for Your Journey
This week’s activity puts into practice growth mindset concepts covered in previous weeks and covers a basic goal setting strategy. By the end, learners will have a goal to work toward, a plan for overcoming any obstacles they might face, and some creative representation of their plan to overcome obstacles and reach their goal. Creating a “Goal Gallery” could be a fun way to surface and celebrate the goals & plans being set in your class.
Weekly Activity #4: Hustle Role Models
What does Hustle really mean? Weekly Activity #4 starts with a message from some super star Hustle role models who exemplify grit and perseverance. The activity walks learners through the process of identifying a Hustle role model who they can recognize in their own life. This could be a fun take home activity that learners present back to the class on after 1-2 weeks of time to work on it!
Weekly Activity #5: The Speed Myth
In this week’s activity, we’re busting a common myth––learning happens fast. Research shows that people learn better when they take their time to think deeply and understand any mistakes they make along the way. Learners are introduced to this concept and encouraged to creatively represent what it means to take your time when learning. Encourage students to share their creations and to remind each other when learning something tough or developing a new skill takes time.
Weekly Activity #6: Solving for Distractions
You may already have strategies in your classroom to help students avoid distractions and stay focused. In this activity we will build on that by walking learners through the steps of creating these environments for themselves. That might mean making a plan to eliminate distractions during homework time or committing to helping eliminate distractions in their classroom or after school program.
Weekly Activity #7: Reflecting on Progress
Now 7 weeks into LearnStorm, we’d like to encourage students to look back on the goals they set in Weekly Activity #3. Reflecting on what has worked well and what you’re still working on is an essential step in reaching goals. After students complete this activity, it may be fun to supplement with creating time for learners to discuss their experience in LearnStorm so far and to share what they’re hoping to accomplish in the remaining weeks!
Weekly Activity #8: Math in the World
The purpose of this activity is to offer exciting examples of how the math students have been learning and practicing in LearnStorm could apply in the real world. LearnStorm is a great way to kick-start an interest in and motivation to learn math and we want to show learners that the effort they choose to put in now and after LearnStorm can open wildly excitingly doors and worlds!
Weekly Activity #9: Letter to a Future LearnStormer
As LearnStorm comes to a close, we’d like to give learners the opportunity to reflect on their experiences and to share encouraging messages with future LearnStormers. Learners can describe how their mindset and attitude toward learning has changed over the last 9 weeks and encourage future learners to build their own growth mindsets!
