I'm confused, how is it 2.5?

Its 2.5 because if you look its between 2 and 3 so mathematically between 2 and 3 has to be 2.5. Its pretty easy for me so ask questions if you have any.

It's always the same no matter what sometimes the numbers are placed different but that's it.

The X-axis is horizontal (left and right) and the Y-axis is vertical (up and down). Basically; for the Y-axis, just go up for positive numbers, and down for negative.

How can I count how many units away something is

If you had two points, (-5, 2) and (3, 2), you would add 5 and 3, which would give you 8, so (-5, 2) and (3, 2) are 8 units away. I hope you understand this better, but it is hard to explain because your question was so broad.

negative numbers are numbers less than zero. FOr example on the x axis, the left side consists of numbers that are negative meaning left on 0,0(origin) which is in the middle. On the right side are positive numbers. On Y, the upper side is positive, and the down side are negative numbers. Hope that helps!

Why can't you use quadrant 4 for plotting -8,6? Why do you have to use quadrant 2?

It is because you always start with the X axis, not the Y axis. If it was ( 6, -8).
