# Worked examples: slope-intercept intro

Worked examples practicing the relationship between slope, y-intercept, and linear equation in slope-intercept form.

• is slope x?
• I learned that the slope is the change in y over the change in x, like: y/x. Hope this helps.
• How exactly do you know how a slope as a fraction is a positive or negative?
• Or if the line is to the left or right (left is negative or decreasing, Right is positive increasing)
• wow, this information seems extremely repetitive and redundant. I understand the importance of driving a point but I could've swore we went over this on 4 different lessons.
• yes exactly

• i learnt the equation as y=mx=c does it make a difference?
• Just note that it is not always the same value as the C in standard form, Ax + By = C
• What exactly is Slope-Intercept form?
• Slope-intercept form is a way of writing a linear equation. The slope-intercept form is written as y = m*x + b where m is the slope of the line and b is the y-value where the line intersects the y-axis.
• why IS the slope the letter M it should be x that confused me
• If the slope was X, then what happens to the variable X that's in a linear equation? X can't be used twice to represent different things in the same equation. M was selected for slope many many years ago to represent slope.
• why the (slope changes in y/change in x) why can,t it can be reciprocal
• Slope is a measurement of how fast the line is rising/falling. This is why we want change in Y on top - it is the component that gives the rise/fall of the line. Y is the dependent variable - its value depends upon the value of X. So, the measurement of slope helps understand this relationship.

IF you use the reciprocal, then the mesurement becomes how fast is a line moving to the left/right which is not meaningful given the "x" is the independent variable.
• But what if m = 0 and x = a whole number?
• Solomon. If the equation is y=mx+b,and M is 0.The equation will be 0x+b.Because a number time 0 is 0,y will equal the slope intercept in a line that is perfectly horizontal
