• so is repeated addition like multiplication?
• Yes, since multiplication consists of repeatedly adding a number, therefore a multiplication allows you to abbreviate a sum, in order not to repeat the sum of the same numbers.

I hope I have helped...
• so 5+5+5+5+5 is the same as 5*5
• Yes it is. Though if you want to write it extremely short you could just say 5 squared or 5 with a superscript 2
• How do you know when to add objects vertically or horizontally in repeated addition?
• It doesn't matter. You can do either one.
• Wait so why would we say 2*2*2*2 = 16? That does not make sense. Why would it not be 8 because 2*4 is 8?

• 2*4 is not the same as 2*2*2*2.

2*4 is the same as 2+2+2+2 because multiplication is repeated addition.

One way to multiply 2*2*2*2 is to multiply by 2 one step at a time:
2*2*2*2 = 4*2*2 = 8*2 = 16.

Another way to multiply 2*2*2*2 is to group the two pairs of 2’s together:
2*2*2*2 = (2*2)*(2*2) = 4*4 = 16.

Have a good day!
