# Subtracting 3-digit numbers (no regrouping)

Sal shows how to subtract 357-251 with place value.

• Using common core how do figure out 81-17 by regrouping
• `80 - 10 = 701 - 7 = -670 + (-6) = 64`
That's how, my friend. It's the same as usual.
• What to do if we had to calculate 357 - 261 (Or any other example where the digit to be subtracted in the tens place is higher)

In the number 357, break up (unbundle) one of the hundreds into 10 tens.
So 357 can be regrouped as 2 hundreds, 15 tens, and 7 ones.
From this, we subtract 2 hundreds, 6 tens, and 1 one.
Ones place: 7-1 = 6.
Tens place: 15-6 = 9.
Hundreds place: 2-2 = 0.
