- Why no mention of Street Art? I mean, Banksy or Basquiat, for instance.(32 votes)
- I would say because the street art of today is not seen as equal to contemporary artists such as Jeff Koons or Mariana Abramovich by galleries and museums. Although I would say that street art is much more democratic and near to the people. "being an artist" today and being recognized as such is still a very intellectual thing , that has to do with the change (that wasn't mentioned in the video) that art today is the concept behind the work not the actual physical result (the painting, the sculpture... etc.) . Example for this are the film stills by Cindy Sherman mentioned in the video. They are not about this picture of a woman in the city, I would say it is about recreating a media image and exposing that it is fiction and construction, and it poses the question if the picture is more authentic when it is made in its period or reenacted years later. (This is my personal opinion others might vary)
This is a bias of things labeled 'contemporary art' that it references many artistic ideas from the last 100 years, what may be excluding art forms like street art.(12 votes)

- PBS used a piece by the artist Kara Walker ( shown @) as part of their culture shock quiz. It is a very interesting way to look at many aspects of art. I have posted the link below. Please note that although pbs has a disclaimer before the quiz and it is advisable if using this as a teaching tool with students or children to review the material in advance. 3:51

- There are many wonderful museums that devote significant resources to contemporary art and some that are entirely given over to it. The New Museum of Contemporary Art, DIa and P.S.1 in New York come to mind but there are many many others. In addition, there organizations such as Artist's Space and Creative Time that do great work but are not museums. And then there are long running periodic exhibitions like the Venice Biennale, Documenta, and the Whitney Biennial. There are also an endless stream of art fairs. And there are many galleries in major cities that show contemporary art.(2 votes)
