BEFORE YOU WATCH: Production and Distribution Frame Introduction
Use the “Three Close Reads” approach as you watch the video below.
Use the “Three Close Reads” approach as you watch the video below (next in the lineup!). If you want to learn more about this strategy, click here.
First read: preview and skimming for gist
Before you watch, you should skim the transcript first. The skim should be very quick and give you the gist (general idea) of what the video is about. You should be looking at the title, thumbnails, pictures, and first few seconds of the video for the gist.
Second read: key ideas and understanding content
Now that you’ve skimmed the video transcript and taken a quick peek at the video, you should preview the questions you will be answering. These questions will help you get a better understanding of the concepts and arguments that are presented in the video. Keep in mind that when you watch the video, it is a good idea to write down any vocab you read or hear that is unfamiliar to you.
By the end of the second close read, you should be able to answer the following questions:
- The video starts with a saying we believe emerged from Chinese society several hundred years ago. What does this saying suggest about some values common to that society in that period?
- Why is it important to start a frame story about production and distribution with the environment?
- According to the video, what was the first system of production and distribution like?
- What are the two biggest changes in production and distribution in human history, according to the video, and when did they occur?
- Have production and distribution grown consistently over the course of human history?
- According to this video, how has our systems of production and distribution changed recently?
Third read: evaluating and corroborating
Finally, here are some questions that will help you focus on why this video matters and how it connects to other content you’ve studied.
At the end of the third read, you should be able to respond to these questions:
- Think about the things you own and about the jobs people do in your community. Based on just that evidence, do you think that the claims made in this video, about production and distribution in the world today, are accurate?
- What kinds of evidence would allow you to evaluate the claims made in this video about the history of production and distribution?
Now that you know what to look for, it’s time to watch! Remember to return to these questions once you’ve finished watching.

- My answers:
1. “Be the first to the field and the last to the couch”- Chinese saying
From the saying, it tells the workers to go to the location of work as early as possible and be the last person to leave work.
2. Because the environment influences the location of the Earth’s sources of energy and natural resources. This in turn influences both which goods and services we produce and distribute and how we do this work.
3. The first system starts on Era 2, where our ancestor develop a farming society, it requires them to specialize in labor to survive & gather resources in a more efficient way.
4.
Columbian Exchange (1500s): Where 2 major trade regions (the Old World & New World) are connected, increasing the diversity of trade goods & ideas.
Industrial Revolution (1800s): Where new improved energy changes how work is done. From farming to factories; from production by human labor to production by machines.
5. No, because there are times where the complexity of trades routes can collapse due to certain factors over time, before there is a chance of recovery.
6. In our recent times, most people in the globe are able to purchase the same goods & services in different nations. However, they made need specialized labor to repair their goods if it is broken.(8 votes) - What aspect of the production and distribution frame narrative changed most dramatically as a result of the expansion of trade routes?(2 votes)
- Why is it important to start a frame story about production and distribution with the environment?(1 vote)
- 1. This society at that time had a lot of manual work and they valued this, as it placed men in a real world with challenges that would develop them. So, we see that with technology, man has become lazy, he does not use his body for good.
2. Because, as long as man is a man, he works and produces, for the development of the family and society.
3. The creation on farms from the moment man stopped being nomadic.
4. The big change is the moment when human beings move from small local productions (farms) and begin to move towards mass production (industrial revolution).
5. No, because the economy that was formed undergoes drastic changes all the time.
6. Changed due to globalization.(1 vote)
