- 12x x 7y = 178
6x x 4y = 48(9 votes)- I don't think you can solve that, have a look and tell me if I have made a mistake. To make the explanation quicker, I have just solved for xy:
1) 12x x 7y = 84xy = 178 <- Lets call this Equation 1
2) 6x x 4y = 24xy = 48 <- Lets call this Equation 2
3) xy = 178/84 = 89/42 <- Derived from Equation 1
4) xy = 48/24 = 2 <- Derived from Equation 2
Proof 89/42 ≠ 2
Therefore this equation cannot be solved. If I made a mistake somewhere, feel free to correct me!(4 votes)
