Lesson 1: Building knowledgeWelcome to the Imaginative Worlds unit!
There’s a lot we can learn about real life through stories. In this unit, we’ll read about some fictional worlds and see what we can learn from them. Can the characters’ struggles with villains and magic represent problems we face in real life? Can the heroes be role models for us? What do imaginary worlds have in common with our own world? This is what we’ll discover as we travel into these imaginary worlds.
In this unit, you will:
- Read stories
- See differences and similarities between real life and fiction
By:
- Watching videos to help you understand what good readers and writers do
- Reading and answering questions about literary and informational texts
- Learning new academic words
In order to answer the essential question: What can fantasy teach us about real life?

- Fantasy is a creative, sensational way to exhibit the inner-most strengths of the characters, which were based usually off of individuals the writer knew. An example is Lord Of The Rings, the fellowship of the ring was based off JRR Tolkien's squadron when he fought in WWII. Many stories are written so you can relate to them, see some of yourself in the character.
While you may not be able to fight a real, fire breathing dragon, you will encounter things in your life that seem very daunting, or dragon-like for you to handle, so have bravery, be kind, and keep reading!(15 votes)

- It depends on how you look at things. Many things happen in real life that are very strange, and this is usually the inspiration for fantasy stories. Dragons may not be alive, or real today, but there were Pterodactyl's, T-Rex's, and they perhaps, are far stranger then a dragon.(9 votes)
