Lesson 4: Organism growth and the environmentOrganism growth and the environment
Review your understanding of organism growth and the environment in this free article aligned to NGSS standards.
Key points:
- An organism’s traits depend on both its genes and its environment.
- Genes make up the hereditary material inside an organism’s cells. Genes provide information about an organism’s traits.
- Genes can affect how an organism grows. For example, some dog breeds are large and others are small. Any influence of genes is called a genetic factor.
- An organism’s environment is all the things the organism is exposed to as it lives and grows. These things include temperature, light, food, and water.
- The environment also affects how an organism grows. For example, a plant will grow bigger if it is given fertilizer. Any influence of the environment is called an environmental factor.

- Does a yellow dandilion turn into the white fluff version? Also if a dandilion grows some place that doesnt have a lot going on how do their seeds desperse? Do they just fall off? or do the seeds stay on until the plant dies?(21 votes)
- It depends what you mean, by nothing going on,if you mean no wind or animal dispersal, it wound most likely fall to the ground.(18 votes)
- one time my dog ate a firefly and then she started foaming at the mouth... she was fine after a drink of water tho. Spicy bug?(13 votes)
- Also maybe because of the chemicals inside the firefly, as t=it uses those to create bioluminescence.(5 votes)
- I watched the video and I got really sad because my dog is really hurting right now and I feel really bad for him because he has been my best friend since the day that my dad brought him home. Anyways no more about me do you guys have any dogs?(12 votes)
- I have a dog, a mini golden-doodle, but i understand what you're going through, a few years ago, I had a dog that I had known all my life, and she just died. It was terrible.(7 votes)
- Does the average organism dwell better in hot or cold environments?(9 votes)
- Depends on its adaptations, but on average, I would say lean towards the hotter side as the air is more humid and since there tends to be more biodiversity in places like Costa Rica.(4 votes)
- If genes are what made our faces etc, is it still in us now?(6 votes)
- i live in Idaho and i have a lot of dandelions does anyone not have dandelions.(3 votes)
- there are always dandelions here in the summer(3 votes)
- What if we interbred two species? Will the two different species provide their separate reproductive cells and fuse them into the offspring? Or is it something completely different?(6 votes)
- People interbreed species ALLL THE TIME(1 vote)
- Whats that small dog breed in the picture?(3 votes)
- it is a chihuahua(3 votes)
- Does the average organism dwell better in hot or cold environments?
•(3 votes)- It depends on the organism, the traits of such organism, since some plants or animals are able to dwell in the cold or heat that others can’t, like a polar bear compared to a cheetah.(3 votes)
- How long are genes passed down for .(3 votes)
- infinity or until they go extinct(2 votes)
