Lesson 2: Resources and population growthResources and population growth
Review your understanding of resources and population growth in this free article aligned to NGSS standards.
Key points:
- Organisms in an ecosystem need resources to survive. Resources include food, water, oxygen, and shelter. Organisms that get more resources are more likely to grow and produce offspring.
- A limited resource is one that is not available in endless supply. As populations get bigger, limited resources can start to run out. When this happens, a population’s growth may slow or stop.
- Organisms often need the same limited resources. This can lead to competition between organisms.
- Competition can happen between organisms of the same species. It can also happen between organisms of different species.
- The size of a population depends on the amount of available resources. A population with more resources will likely be larger than a population with fewer resources.

- how do i know whats an ecosystem, population, and community?(13 votes)
- An ecosystem is everything that is alive and non living like water and soil along with the animals and plants. A population is a certain type of animal living together. A community is all the living things that are living close to each other. Does this help?(67 votes)
- I hope this helps.
Population: An amount of the same species of animals or living organisms in an area or any form of living organisms in an area.
Community: Different species or types of living organisms living together within close proximity.
Ecosystem: The ground, the water, the fruit, the animals, the oxygen, etc. all together make what is called an "ecosystem".
If I got anything wrong please correct me! Thanks!(30 votes) - Those birds be throwing hands for real(21 votes)
- what bird is that(4 votes)
- They are seagulls, look at the image caption(16 votes)
- What if in a country there once was an abundant supply of water, then all of a sudden the water ran out?(6 votes)
- A lot of the ecosystem will perish/be heavily impacted(4 votes)
- what is the difference between a community and an ecosystem(6 votes)
- A community is a group of different animals and organisms living in the same area while an ecosystem is all of the organisms in an area plus every nonliving part of the environment (sand, water, dirt, air etc.).(6 votes)
- how can one animal know what plants that are edible to the ones that are not?(2 votes)
- uhmm not sure but maybe bc of their smell and color(2 votes)
- Another reason they don't have that many animals is because predators kill them. They could have all the reasources but major predators could easily kill them.(7 votes)
- But what will happen if the is water, food, air and space but too many animals and they start fighting and killing each other? Can that affect the growth and health of the animals?(4 votes)
- yeah, they will fight with each other to get the limited amount of resources(2 votes)
- can an ecosystem affect us humans?(2 votes)
- yes a city with pigeons cats humans and buildings is an ecosytem dominated by humans (not counting microbes)(5 votes)
