Understanding SAT scores

A summary of the SAT scoring scale
Understanding your SAT scores can help you understand your strengths and areas for growth as you start preparing for college!

Where can I get my scores?

You can find out when your scores will be released by checking the score release schedule. Once your scores have been released, head to the SAT score reporting portal to sign in and receive your score report.

What do my scores mean?

Your total score is your overall score and is a combination of your section scores (see below). The highest composite score for the SAT is 800+800, or 1600. The average score is 1000.
Your section scores are the individual scores for the two main sections of the SAT: Reading and Writing and Math. Each of these sections is scored out of 800, and they are added together to get your overall score.
Wondering if your score will help you get into your college of choice? Many colleges and universities will list the SAT score ranges of admitted students on their websites. While a score in that range is no guarantee of admission (and a score outside that range is no guarantee that you won’t be admitted), this info might help you figure out how your score compares to those of typical students at your school of choice. Just remember–your SAT score is only one part of your application!

What are benchmarks and why do they matter?

Benchmarks are scores on each of the sections that are used to assess college readiness. Students who achieve the benchmark on both sections are considered to be college ready. But don’t worry if you didn’t achieve the benchmark! Students who score below the benchmark in one or both sections can still succeed in college, with some extra support and perseverance. The benchmark score for the Reading and Writing section is 480. The benchmark score for the Math section is 530.

How important is my SAT score?

SAT scores can feel like a big deal, and in some ways they are. Your SAT score may play a role in the college admissions process, or it may determine your eligibility for high school graduation. However, it’s important to keep in mind that while the SAT is one way to measure your academic abilities, it is only a snapshot from one point in time. Your SAT score doesn’t define who you are, what you’re capable of, or what your academic future may hold.
Your SAT score also isn’t fixed. You can always learn more and improve your performance with practice. You’ve got this!

Hey! I am supposed to take the test this year and I am discouraged! All of my areas are great! However, my math is seriously lacking on the pre-test which is weird because my grades for math have been just fine. Can anyone give me tips and suggestions on what to do? Does anyone relate? I have no idea what's going on! Thank you. :)

There's several reasons you might be having trouble, and you might have to experiment a little to troubleshoot or "debug" your testing experience. Here's a few things that might be causing the difference between your performance in class and on the test.

      1. You may not have enough practice with the format of the questions on the SAT. Since the SAT uses very specific types of questions that you probably don't see in your math class, the difference in format might be throwing you off. If you haven't already, try doing lots of SAT-specific practice with Khan Academy or Bluebook and see if that improves your score.

      2. The environment you're taking practice tests in is different. Many people don't immediately realize just how much of an impact their environment has on their performance quality. In school, the classroom environment is drastically different from the home environment where I assume you've taken practice tests (or from the suffocating, quiet environment of testing rooms). If this is an issue, I would recommend doing your practice in an environment specifically designed to mimic your environment on test day. Play background noise of other people taking the test through noise-cancelling headphones, remove all distractions, and stay seated for the entire test. You can even explore how your temperature is affecting your performance by turning on a fan or wearing a jacket!

      3. You're having trouble focusing on the test, which requires a pretty solid attention span. I know that I can hardly stand sitting through practice SAT tests, and this might be the case for you, too. This is a harder problem to solve, but you can see if this is affecting your score by stepping away from the test for a while between sections and seeing if your score improves. However, be careful not to do so in other practice tests. If you practice taking the test in a different way than you will have to take it on test day, you might be disappointed when you receive your scores. If you find that your focus is a problem, look for tips online or in books, speak to an experienced teacher, or talk to a psychologist about the science behind your attention span!

      Hopefully that helps! Good luck!

Fairly important. The SAT ideally serves as a way for colleges to very easily compare applicants, so for many colleges it is sort of a primary criteria for judging your application. If your grades in school and SAT/ACT scores are good, then smaller parts of your college application such as your list of extracurriculars and recommendation letters may be deciding factors. However, if you don't have a particularly high SAT score, it is very easy for a college admissions team to look at that low number and dismiss your application.
However, due to the pandemic and arguments made against standardized testing, there's a good chance that colleges across the USA are not considering SAT and ACT scores as highly as they used to.

You should check online for past admission score, since all university has varying admission score.

So after a bit of research I believe UFM you meant is Universidad Francisco Marroquín, which is around QS Ranking 850.
University around this level requires SAT ~1200.
