What is the digital SAT?

College Board, the maker of the SAT, is introducing changes to both the content of the test and how the test is administered in order to better fit the needs of students and educators. Most notably, the test will transition from being taken with paper and pencil to being administered via a digital assessment platform accessed by computer.
While the transition to digital will bring a number of student- and educator-friendly changes, many important features of the SAT Suite will stay the same. The SAT Suite will continue to measure the knowledge and skills that students are learning in school and that matter most for college and career readiness. The digital SAT isn’t simply a digital version of the current paper and pencil test—it will be easier to take, more secure, and more relevant.

Which version of the SAT will I take?

The transition to the digital version of the SAT will occur gradually over the next two years:
Starting in March 2023, the digital SAT will be administered to all international students (students taking the test outside the United States or its territories).
Starting in spring 2024, the digital SAT will be taken by all students (both international and within the US).
So, if you’re planning to take the SAT in 2023, you should prepare for the digital SAT only if you’ll be taking the test internationally. If you plan to take the SAT in 2023 within the US, you should prepare for the paper and pencil test using Khan Academy’s Official SAT Practice.
If you’re planning to take the SAT in 2024 or later, regardless of location, you’re in the right place!

What is the best way to prepare for test day?

Khan Academy’s Official Digital SAT Prep includes thousands of SAT Math questions and hundreds of SAT Reading and Writing questions developed by the test-maker, College Board, and loaded with insightful lessons and explanations written by Khan Academy’s test prep experts. Before jumping into practice, though, we recommend getting familiar with the format of the test, the content of the test, and the digital platform on which the test is administered by taking a full length practice test.
There are two main components to a productive practice plan:
  1. Full-length practice tests
Full-length practice tests give you the best idea of what test day will be like, offering the ideal opportunity to both test your skills and become familiar with the testing platform. You can take full-length practice tests using College Board’s Bluebook app. After taking each practice test, you can review your performance and read answer explanations for the questions you missed.
We recommend taking full-length practice tests at set intervals throughout your test prep journey. Starting with a practice test will allow you to diagnose the areas where you need the most practice. Future practice tests will allow you to gauge your progress, refine the focus of your skill practice, and build endurance and experience for test day.
  1. Skill practice
Skill practice involves exploring the different types of SAT questions, learning strategies for answering those questions, and practicing the skills that those questions test. The best way to practice individual skills is to explore both the digital SAT Math course and the digital SAT Reading and Writing course on Khan Academy. You can read articles and watch videos covering each skill, and then you can practice those skills and test yourself in the related exercises. As you become proficient in more skills, you’ll become more prepared for test day.
Good luck! You’ve got this.
