A quick example of an SAT Boundaries question. Punctuation adds structure to a sentence and makes the meaning of each part of the sentence clear. This Boundaries question asks us whether a question mark or a period is needed at the end of the sentence, and how to construct the sentence accordingly. I still didn’t get why we get rid of that “do”. Can someone explain pls(25 votes)- "Do" is an auxiliary verb used to make questions and negative statements.
Here are some examples:
1)How much artificial sweetener do they prefer?
2)They do not prefer much artificial sweeteners.
However, when it comes to the sentence in the question above, notice that we make neither a question nor a negative statement. That is why we don't include "do" here. So, you should write it in its original form which is a noun followed by a verb-They were hired to determine how much artificial sweetener most people prefer in a diet drink.

Yes, the psychophisicist (spelled wrong lol) is trying to answer the question of how much artificial sweetner people like in their diet drinks.
However, you don't use a question mark at the end of that sentence because 1) We're not questioning that Moskowitz is trying to determine how much sweetner people like (if you put a question mark there that's what it would imply) and 2) It's not even worded rightly for a question.
We're using something called indirect statement here. So we're reporting on what he's doing.

i get the first part but why do we get rid of "do most". both make complete sense. if we got rid of it because its 'wordy' do we always apply this? i mean if two choices are correct just choose the one that's less wordy?(1 vote)
Hi! I think the inclusion of the verb 'do' is incorrect because it would result in a run-on sentence. This is because there would be two sets of verbs and their corresponding nouns without a proper joining word or punctuation. And it also doesn't sound very good ;) That's my view on it anyway.(2 votes)
