Lesson 8: ElectrostaticsFoil leaf electroscope
Foil Leaf Electroscope. Aluminum leaves repel in the presence of a charged object. Created by Brit Cruise.

- Why do the aluminium leaves repel? Could it be due to the fact that they are metals(and hence electron donors) and don't want to accept static electricity?(17 votes)
- remember, opposites attract, like repel. :D they have the same amount of negative and positive charges so they repel.(1 vote)
- How does the foil repel?(2 votes)
- There is a very useful diagram here, that shows what happens to the charges in the object and different parts of the electroscope.

Each leaf gets the same charge, so they repel each other.(1 vote)
- Can someone please tell which is the positive charge and which is the negative charge?(2 votes)
- the copper is the positive charge . https://www.khanacademy.org/science/mit-k12/mit-k12-physics/v/the-invention-of-the-battery(1 vote)
- Is the foil leaf electroscope the same thing as a the gold leaf electroscope except with a gold sheet ?(2 votes)
- Great question, and yes! Gold is a fantastic conductor, just very expensive. We *could* use gold wire up our house except copper is much more affordable.(0 votes)
- Why is only vacuum used for this experiment?
Why can't we use other mediums?(1 vote)- A vaccum has nothing in it, so nothing can interfere with the leaf.(1 vote)
- Do you have to orient that plate at the angle you did to get this affect? If you were to tilt the plate say 90 degrees in one direction would it still induce a charge? Is the Vacuum of the mason jar significant to the experiment?(1 vote)
- what is the difference between electro & current(1 vote)
- The leaves on a metal leaf electroscope repel each other even though no other objects are touching it. Explain what must have happened if no charged object ever touched the electroscope.(1 vote)
- actually, i am trying rubbing glass rod with silk but the glass rod does not acquire any charge on it, which material should i use.(1 vote)
- a comb can be charged easily by combing.. you can use it..(1 vote)
- Does this jar has something to do with the Leyden Jar?(1 vote)
- A Leyden jar has a capacitance- it can store and release a charge. This thing, however, does not serve that purpose, being an electroscope, not a capacitor. The similarities don't go much further than the jars that both devices have included in their designs.(1 vote)
