Lesson 3: Why do we need both distance and direction to truly grasp motion?

Average speed & velocity (with examples)

Let's learn what average speed & velocity are using some examples. Created by Mahesh Shenoy.

• velocity = displacement/time and average velocity = initial velocity + final velocity/2.
Then in the above question, we are to find the average velocity but then still why is the displacement/time formula is being used?
• Actually both the formula's still produce the same answer, since the initial velocity is 0. When the initial velocity is 0 then the displacement=final velocity.
Initial velocity = 0
Final velocity = 2 km/h
Total time = 2 h
Avg velocity = Iv + Fv/2
Avg velocity = 0+2/2
Avg velocity = 1 km/h
• Let's say I wanted to travel a circular path, with my initial point being the same as my final point.

Now, according to the formula, my velocity is disp./time. Right? That would give my velocity as zero since the displacement is zero. ( Remember, my start and end point are same)

But with zero velocity, I wouldn't even move from my place!
How is this even possible?

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!
• Since your initial and final point are the same, your displacement and velocity is 0. A 0 velocity does not mean you haven't moved at all. Remember, zero velocity is not zero acceleration.
• is displacement and velocity same ?
• No, they aren't.
Displacement is the distance between something.
Velocity is the displacement of an object in unit time.
• what is the definition of average speed?
• Average speed can be calculated by the total distance travelled divided by the total timespan of the motion.
