Lesson 8: Domestic circuits

# Domestic circuit connection & fuse - Domestic circuit (Part 2)

Let's explore how the domestic circuits are connected (whether in series or parallel). Also, let's learn how the fuse helps protect the domestic circuits from voltage surges. This helps us explore why we have two separate circuits, one for low power devices (with 5A fuse) and one for high power devices (with 15 A fuse). Created by Mahesh Shenoy.

• Can low power devices be connected to the high current plugpoints?
• Yes , and there is no problem in that , as it provides more electric capacity (of 15 Ampere ) and we just need 5 ampere , there is no problem .
• If there is overflow of electricity , rather than using fuse , can't we make it useful ? Can't we store it ?
• Why is the fuse always connected to the live wire?
• The circuit will break if the fuse is connected to live or neutral, however if we cut neutral in the case of a failure, the circuit can still shock you due to the capacitance of your body.

• How does Miniature Circuit breaker , work ?

• Circuit breaker essentially consists of fixed and moving contacts. These contacts are touching each other and carrying the current under normal conditions when the circuit is closed. When the circuit breaker is closed, the current carrying contacts, called the electrodes, engaged each other under the pressure of a spring.

During the normal operating condition, the arms of the circuit breaker can be opened or closed for a switching and maintenance of the system. To open the circuit breaker, only a pressure is required to be applied to a trigger.

Whenever a fault occurs on any part of the system, the trip coil of the breaker gets energized and the moving contacts are getting apart from each other by some mechanism, thus opening the circuit.
hope it helps.
