Calculate charge enclosed in a non uniform electric field
Let's calculate the charge enclosed by a cylinder placed in a non-uniform electric field. Since a cylinder is a closed surface, we can use Gauss's law to help us. Created by Mahesh Shenoy.

- How is there a charge enclosed in the cylinder if the field exists outside of the cylinder? If there is no enclosed charge in the cylinder then the net electric flux is 0, right?(2 votes)
- Not quite, the field doesn't exist exclusively outside of the cylinder, it exists everywhere in the 3D plane and that includes inside the cylinder as well because the field depends on the y-coordinate.(2 votes)
