Severe storms
We might prefer beautiful weather reports, but we really pay attention when severe storms are predicted. So how do Earth's most powerful storms develop, and how is this related to cloud formation?

- How is lightning created?(9 votes)
- In a cloud, there are many ice particles and water molecules that all bump into each other constantly. Every time this happens, it causes an electrical charge. Positive charges (protons) form at the top of the cloud, while the negative charges (electrons) are at the bottom of the cloud. Also, positive charges (protons) can form on the ground. Since opposites attract, the protons and electrons try to meet, and when they do, lightning strikes! Lighting can occur inside a cloud, from one cloud to another, or from a cloud to the ground!

P.S. Remember: When thunder roars, go indoors! :)(15 votes)
- Are clouds and storms affected due to pressure?(8 votes)
- Yes they are affected by air pressure. When pressure is high there is more possibility of storms when a low pressure system comes under a high pressure system.(6 votes)
- Does anyone know why sand does not form a vortex (like a tornado) when it is sinking in a hour-glass?
@Croggie2000 thanks for your answer, that was really helpful :)(4 votes)- In a tornado, there is a force (wind) that is making it a vortex. But in an hourglass, the sand pours straight down.(3 votes)
- Can a tornado merge with a hurricane? Or will the hurricane destroy the tornado?(2 votes)
- At1:19when the people in the boat are watching the water go up and form in to clouds, did that actually happen or was that a CGI representation of what happens?(1 vote)
- That was a depiction of what happens on a microscopic level when clouds are formed.(3 votes)
- How is Lighting created?(1 vote)
- Lightning is created when electric charges in the sky and ground interact, causing an electric spark in between.(1 vote)
- 1. How often does a tornado hit the southeastern counties in Kansas ?
2. What color is the sky for a wall cloud to appear
3. Are they E-F10 tornadoes(1 vote)- Just wanted to say that the tornado scale is wrong. It is F0-F5. There is no F10. If there was well . . .(2 votes)
