What is the opposite of a number?

The opposite of a number is the number on the other side of 0 on the number line, and the same distance from 0.
Example:
5 is the opposite of 5.
A number line from negative 7 to 7 with evenly spaced tick marks in increments of 1. A line pointing left starts at 0 and ends at negative 5. A line pointing right starts at 0 and ends at 5.

Ways to write the opposite of a number

We can write the opposite of a number using a negative sign.
Example:
The opposite of 2.2 can be written (2.2).
