when you were doing 1/3 you just shaded 1 part out of 3 isn't we have shade all three boxes because we are dividing 1 into 3 parts so all 3 parts will be having some part of 1 to make it whole or you did that divided a whole into 3 parts and say that each part will contain 1/3 to get to 3.
