k/2 + 1/2 = 3
Why can't I divide both sides by 2 and then subtract 1/2 from both sides to cancel it out? Would the answer be different if the 1/2 were 0.5 instead? Sorry if this is a stupid question.
• Hey! You don't need to divide both sides by 2 because the left side already has two numbers which are divided between 2, and if you divide both sides by 2, left side will have numbers divided by 4. Changing 1/2 for 0.5 will make the problem more difficult so I don't recommend you to do it. There are lots of methods to do it, and I will show you how to do it step by step with one method:

In this equation we can see there are two fractions at the left and one at the right, as both fractions are divided by 2, you should convert the number of the right (in this case 3) into a fraction divided by 2, in this case, we can use 6/2 (that is equal to 3) and the equation would be:

k/2 + 1/2 = 6/2

now, we can remove the /2 of all numbers and we get:

k + 1 = 6
k = 6 - 1
k = 5

So now you know the k value is 5.

• (Your comment is kind of outdated but-) that is because the order of operation while isolating the variable is addition and subtraction first then mult or div. In the video, Sal adds 10/3 to both sides of the equation in the process of isolating the variable.

• the questions in the exercise are WAY harder than these. someone please explain this before my brain explodes
• maybe it is because in the vid it just shows you how to do it generaly, but in the exersises it adds things like negative numbers and fractions and stiuff

• I don't understand how w=7 isn't right for this equation the equation was -4(w+1)=-24
• Because when doing the answer he distributed by multiplying -4 with the w making it -4w and the other when distributed was just -4 which you add to the -24 making 28 because a negative plus a negative equals a positive then you divide the -4w and the 28 with each other making 7 so w does equal 7.

• In the first example, why can't I multiply both sides by 4 before adding 10/3? I get a different answer than the way Sal did. This is how I solved:
-1/3 = j/4 - 10/3
-4/3 = j - 10/3
2 = j
