Lesson 8: Dividing decimals

# Dividing a decimal by a whole number example

To divide a decimal by a whole number, you can convert the decimal into a certain number of hundredths. After dividing the whole number into those hundredths, you can then convert the result back into a decimal form.

• Okay, so like I see a lot of confusion... Anyway, the concept is simple. So, 1.86 in 1.86 ÷ 2 can be written as 186 hundredths (hundredths is the smallest place value). Now, you'll just divide 186 and 2 and get 93. Since we wrote 1.86 as 186 hundredths, we'll write 93 as 0.93. It's simple.

*Note: Sorry, I wrote this when I was younger -- I have to edit it because many people are concerned with something I said
• NO NEED TO BE RUDE BrUh
• Can you explain in a different way
• 1.86 = 186 hundredths

Divide 186 by 2. Result is 93. Remember we are dividing hundredths. So your quotient is 0.93.

• What is there’s a remainder? I’m still struggling with this.
• I'll try to guide you to the answer with questions.

Ask yourself this, what is a remainder?

Then think about multiplying in groups and totals

8 is 2 groups of 4 or 4 + 4

When Khan got his answer but never mentioned a remainder, what does that mean for the answer?

Hope this helps
• italics It doesnt explain the math im doing its like this:

bold*3.64÷7= hundredths÷7

*bold*3.64÷7= hundredths

*bold
3.64÷7=
• First of all, to get bold words, you wrap them around *. . .* The dotts I added to indicate the words/phrases. Italic or slanted phrases/words need to be wrapped around like: . . .

Coming to the point, if you write 3.64 in hundredths, it would be 364 hundredths, and you do 364 ÷ 7 = 52
Since you wrote 364 in hundredths, so do you for 52 (0.52). So 3.64 ÷ 7 is 0.52.

hope i helped :) <3
• can you explain it more please
• So if I'm getting this right:
1.86 = 186/100, or 1 86/100.
And then it's 1 86/100 divided by 2?
Which means it should also be...
100/100 + 86/100.
Which means the "DIVIDED BY 2" part could also be...
100 divided by 2/100
and
86 divided by 2/100.
50/100 and 43/100. 50/100 + 43/100 = 93/100.
Is this method accurate?
• i am soo confused pls help me TYSM^^
