Converting percents and fractions review

Review writing percents as fractions and fractions as percents.  Then, try some practice problems.

Writing percents as fractions

Percent means 'per hundred.' So, we can replace a percent sign with 'per hundred.'
Example
Let's write 15% as a fraction.
15%=15 per hundred=15100

Convert 65% to a fraction in simplest form.
  • Your answer should be
  • a simplified proper fraction, like 3/5
  • a simplified improper fraction, like 7/4

Writing fractions as percents

Percent means 'per hundred.' So, we want to create an equivalent fraction with 100 as the denominator.
Example
Let's write 45 as a percent.
The key here is to turn 45 to a fraction with a denominator of 100. To do this, we need to know what times 5 gives us 100:
5×20=100
Now we're ready to convert 45 to a percent:
45=4×205×20=80100
80100=80 per hundred=80%

  • a simplified proper fraction, like 3/5
