Lesson 4: Volume word problems# Volume: FAQ

Frequently asked questions about volume.

## What is volume?

Volume is the measure of how much space an object takes up. We often measure volume in cubic units, like cubic inches or cubic centimeters.

## What are unit cubes?

Unit cubes are cubes that measure exactly one unit on each side. We use them to help us calculate the volume of other shapes.

Try it yourself with these exercises:

## How do we find the volume of a rectangular prism?

There are a few different ways we can find the volume of a rectangular prism. We can use unit cubes to fill the prism and count how many we used, or we can multiply the area of the base by the height of the prism.

Try it yourself with these exercises:

## What does it mean to decompose a figure to find volume?

To decompose a figure means to break it down into smaller shapes. We can use this strategy to find the volume of more complicated shapes by breaking them down into shapes we know how to measure.

## How do we use volume in the real world?

Volume is used in a lot of different ways in the real world! For example, when we want to know how much liquid a container can hold, we're measuring its volume. When we're packing a moving truck, we need to know the volume of all the boxes we're putting in so we don't overfill it.

- are there any trick to find the answer if there is a lot of numbers?(19 votes)
- split the shape in to parts and then find the volume of both shapes(11 votes)

*To find the volume for a rectangular prism, you multiply the Length × Width × Height*(19 votes)- but it is not always like that though because eventually there will be two types of prisms which means it will sometimes mean area(2 votes)

- Everyone, comment on this to make it the most commented ever(15 votes)
- this is not even a question.(1 vote)

- This is pretty hard.. I might need a better explanation, could anyone explain it in an easier way for me?

Comment: Sorry. If there's no other way to explain it easier. I'm all ears.(9 votes)- To find volume you would need to multiply Length x Width x Height. This means, say, we had a shape that was 12 meters high, 4 meters long, and 8 meters wide. You would multiply some easy numbers first, like 8 x 4, which equals to 32. Then, you would multiply 32 with 12, or 32 x 12, to get 384. Hopefully you understand how to solve for volume better now! Have a great day (:(10 votes)

- Just Multiply! Its Easier Than You Think!(12 votes)
- Hey I have a question, what are mastery points for?(5 votes)
- They contribute to your percentage of how much completed on the subject. They can be earned from a quiz, exercises, and unit tests.(5 votes)

- So easy just mutiply(5 votes)
- how do you solve it?(4 votes)
- What about a circle? It looks confusing(3 votes)
- what do I do if the problem has this (968x766) + 675

ps: I made up the number(2 votes)- Do standard multiplication and then just add your answer from the multiplication to the number you are adding(2 votes)
