• A mathematical expression is a sequence of numbers and operations. However, it does not include an equal sign. ex. 6+4-5x75 is a mathematical expression. 7-4=3 is not a mathematical expression.

We subtract the 6 from the 10 and we get 4.
If we add that 4 with the other 4 we get 8.

In these type of problems all you have to do is do the opposite of what it's asking. But, you would, in this case, still subtract since you are trying to find the number you subtract by and not the number you subtract from. So, 9-5=4 the missing value is 4.
For the second problem you add since you are trying to find the number you subtract from. So, 4+5=9 the missing value is 9.

We have the original number, but we can put it in expanded form*.

So, 16 = 10 + 6, and we can use this.

We know that 10 - 9 = 1, and then we can add the remaining 6 to get 7.

Expanded form is just taking the values of each number and adding them to create a number. For example, 17 = 10 + 7

You can also use this for bigger numbers

• For example, think you have 51 things in a group and I want to add 1 more thing in that group (51 + 1), I would get 52 things in the group as an answer.
• IF possibly, 10+4-4=10,
then why not,10*4-4=10??
• Multiplying (that *) is really nothing else than adding the same number several times. In the case of "10*4", this really means the same as "10 + 10 + 10 + 10". So, if we rewrite your expression, we get:
10*4-4 = 10+10+10+10-4
And then you just go from left to right, remembering each answer:
10+10+10+10-4 = 20+10+10+4-4 = 30+10-4 = 40-4 = 36.

In the original expression we also simply go from left to right:
10+4-4 = 14-4 = 10.
So you see, there is nothing special about that "4-4".
• This is how you do it. 14 is equivalent to 7 and you subtract that. BUT THEN 7 IS ONE MORE, SO YOU ADD 3!! That's how you do iT1!
