Finding equivalent fractions using multiplication

Let's look at an example.
What number could replace a below?
start fraction, 2, divided by, 3, end fraction, equals, start fraction, a, divided by, 12, end fraction
First, we need to figure out what to multiply 3 by to get 12:
start fraction, 2, divided by, 3, end fraction, times, start fraction, divided by, 4, end fraction, equals, start fraction, divided by, 12, end fraction
Next, we multiply the numerator by the same number as the denominator:
start fraction, 2, divided by, 3, end fraction, times, start fraction, 4, divided by, 4, end fraction, equals, start fraction, 8, divided by, 12, end fraction
start fraction, 2, divided by, 3, end fraction, equals, start fraction, 8, divided by, 12, end fraction, so we can replace the a with an 8.
