# Ordering negative numbers

Extend the idea of greater than and less than to negative numbers!
We already know that numbers farther to the right on the number line are greater for positive numbers.
For example, start color blueD, 5, end color blueD is greater than start color goldD, 2, end color goldD because start color blueD, 5, end color blueD is farther to the right than start color goldD, 2, end color goldD on the number line:
Key idea: The fact that numbers farther to the right on the number line are greater, is true for both positive and negative numbers.
For example, start color goldD, minus, 2, end color goldD is greater than start color blueD, minus, 5, end color blueD because start color goldD, minus, 2, end color goldD is farther to the right than start color blueD, minus, 5, end color blueD on the number line:

## Let's Practice!

1) True/False: 1 is greater than 4.

Let's find start color blueD, 1, end color blueD and start color goldD, 4, end color goldD on the number line:
start color goldD, 4, end color goldD is to the right of start color blueD, 1, end color blueD.
So, start color goldD, 4, end color goldD is greater than start color blueD, 1, end color blueD.
False
2) True/False: minus, 1 is greater than minus, 4.

Let's find start color blueD, minus, 1, end color blueD and start color goldD, minus, 4, end color goldD on the number line:
start color blueD, minus, 1, end color blueD is to the right of start color goldD, minus, 4, end color goldD.
So, start color blueD, minus, 1, end color blueD is greater than start color goldD, minus, 4, end color goldD.
True
3) True/False: minus, 5 is greater than minus, 3.

Let's find start color blueD, minus, 3, end color blueD and start color goldD, minus, 5, end color goldD on the number line:
start color blueD, minus, 3, end color blueD is to the right of start color goldD, minus, 5, end color goldD.
So, start color blueD, minus, 3, end color blueD is greater than start color goldD, minus, 5, end color goldD.
False
4) True/False: 2 is greater than minus, 3.

Let's find start color blueD, 2, end color blueD and start color goldD, minus, 3, end color goldD on the number line:
start color blueD, 2, end color blueD is to the right of start color goldD, minus, 3, end color goldD.
So, start color blueD, 2, end color blueD is greater than start color goldD, minus, 3, end color goldD.
True
5) Order the following numbers from least to greatest.
• 3
• minus, 1
• minus, 4
• 2

Let's find start color blueD, 2, end color blueD, comma, start color goldD, 3, end color goldD, comma, start color redD, minus, 4, end color redD, comma and start color greenD, minus, 1, end color greenD on the number line:
Here is the order from least to greatest:
start color redD, minus, 4, end color redD, comma, start color greenD, minus, 1, end color greenD, comma, start color blueD, 2, end color blueD, comma, start color goldD, 3, end color goldD

## Challenge problem

Order the following numbers from least to greatest.
• 59
• minus, 25
• minus, 62
• 33

Let's approximate start color blueD, minus, 62, end color blueD, comma, start color goldD, 59, end color goldD, comma, start color redD, minus, 25, end color redD, comma and start color greenD, 33, end color greenD on a number line:
Here is the order from least to greatest:
start color blueD, minus, 62, end color blueD, comma, start color redD, minus, 25, end color redD, comma, start color greenD, 33, end color greenD, comma, start color goldD, 59, end color goldD
