we're asked to move the orange dot to five point nine zero on the number line or you could view this as five and ninety hundredths or five and nine tenths alright so let's see this is five point eight and then this is six point zero one way to think about it is five point nine is exactly halfway between five point eight and six point O and this is it's written as five point nine zero but we could view this as five point nine so it's going to be exactly exactly halfway now one interesting to think one interesting thing to think about is well what are each of these tick marks represent well this is five point eight and if a tenth higher than five point eight is five point nine over here and then a tenth higher than that is six point O so from here to here is a tenth and then from here to here is another tenth and so each of these and then they've divided each tenth into one two three four five six seven eight nine ten sections so each of these represent a tenth of a tenth or a hundredth so for example this would be five point eight one five point eight two five point eight three five point eight four five point eight five five point eight six five point eight seven five point eight eight five point eight nine five point nine a zero so either way I think we got it alright let's let's keep doing some more of these move the orange dot to two point eight seven on the number line all right this is interesting so this is two point eight that's 3.0 halfway in between would be this is kind of this longer hash mark or this longer tick mark right over here this would be two point nine and so two point eight seven this is just like we saw in the last example each of these is a hundred so this is two point eight this would be two point eight one two point eight two two point eight three two point eight four two point eight five two point eight six two point eight seven and we could just check this would be two point eight eight two point eight nine two point nine which is exactly or two point nine zero which is exactly halfway between two point eight and 3.0 so I'm feeling good about that let's check our answer we got it right you know after you get a question right it doesn't hurt to look at the hints at that point so let's just see how they tackled it so they say above we've drawn the number line from 2.8 to 3.0 and they divide into 20 equal pieces yep that that looks that looks right let's see their next hint and so they say that piece of the line is 3.0 minus 2.8 where that's going to be 2/10 and then you divide by 20 is 0.1 so that's another way that there's just saying that hey each of these is a hundredth but we already saw that two point eight one two point eight two two point eight three two point eight four two point eight five two point eight six two point eight seven well let's just do another one and the hints actually I think keep going after that so we should see so I encourage you to look at the hints see if you can make sense of them after you try the exercise so let's let's try a let's try another one let's do one more move the orange dot two zero point two seven on the number line well this is zero point 2 this is zero point three so going from here to here is a tenth and then they've divided that tenth into ten sections so each of these is a tenth of a tenth which is a hundredth so this is two tenths and zero hundreds two tenths and 100 2/10 and two hundredths to tenths and three hundredths to tenths and for hundreds 2,500 two tenths and six hundredths to tenths and seven hundredths this is two tenths and seven hundredths another way you could view it is this is 20 hundredths to tenths is the same thing as 2000s 2,100 2,200 2,300 2,400 2,500 2,600 2,700 all right check our answer and let's just see what the hints so they say ten equal pieces they show us that right over here they actually labeled it anyway hopefully this helps encourage you to go try this exercise out now
