Regrouping whole number place values

Lindsay regroups whole numbers by their place values.

• Place value is hard how does it get easy?
• place value shows where one number is in a full number, just think about it like this

842 / 2 = ?
8 / 2 = 4 (800 / 2 = 400)
4 / 2 = 2 (40 / 2 = 20)
2 / 2 = 1 (2 / 2 = 1)

so breaking it up into place values makes the equation easier, because you know where the numbers are separately and what their value is.
• How is this help me with my math ?
• lets say you are dividing 8642 by 2, if we break it up into place values it will be easier:

8000 = 8 thousands = (8 x 1000)
8 / 2 = 4
4 x 1000 = 4000
600 = 6 hundreds = (6 x 100)
6 / 2 = 3
3 x 100 = 300
40 = 4 tens = (4 x 10)
4 / 2 = 2
2 x 10 = 20
2 = 2 ones = (2 x 1)
2 / 2 = 1
1 x 1 = 1

4000
300
20
1

8642 / 2 = 4321
• But how will adding a zero at the end for 30 look like on the place value chart? How will it make sense?
• 3 x 10 = 30
if we times something by 10 we push the original number forward and the original place value to 0.

• Just asking even though it is not really related to this video, what is the difference between value and place value?

• The value of a number is simply the amount it represents. You'll find the term "value" used a lot when you get to algebra to represent what number a variable stands for.

"Place value" on the other hand is the value of a single digit based on its distance to the right or left of a decimal point when it's written down.
• What place is the 5 in for 56,040,201

• The place value in the number 56,040,201 is 50,000,000 because when we expand the number, we get 50,000,000 + 6,000,000 + 40,000 + 200 + 1.

• how many hundreds are in 100,000
• There are 100 hundreds in 100,000
• this is so good for people who dont know how to do this yet!
