# Whole number place value review

Review whole number place value, and try some practice problems.

## Place value chart

The number $7,654,321$ can be placed on a place value chart as follows:
MillionsHundred thousandsTen thousandsThousandsHundredsTensOnes
$7$$6$$5$$4$$3$$2$$1$

## Whole number place value

In a whole number, the digit farthest to the right is always in the ones place. The next farthest to the right is in the tens place. The remaining digits continue to fill in the place values until there are no digits left.
Example: $459$
The number $459$ is made up of $4$ hundreds, $5$ tens, and $9$ ones.
We can also write this as: $459=400+50+9$.
Or we can use a place value chart:
ThousandsHundredsTensOnes
$4$$5$$9$
Note: The farther the digit is to the left, the greater its place value. For example, $6$ hundreds is greater than $6$ ones because hundreds are farther to the left.

• you cannot because hen you divide the divisor has to be larger than the dividend unless you do fractions or decimals
• Why is place value useful?
• There's a concept in higher sciences like chemistry and biology called significant figures. It's complicated, but it is based on place value.
• if you have a two 4 digit number and two numbers are the same, they must be different because they are on different place values.
• What happens to a number when the digits move to the right?
• I have hit the correct answer of 5000 but it doesnt register

• The first decimal system was introduced in the 4th Century BC by the Sumerians of Mesopotamia, to whom the invention of writing is credited. They based their numerical system on powers of 60 subdivided into multiples of 10.
