Does technology belong in PreK classrooms? It's one of the most debated questions in early childhood education — and the answer is more nuanced than a simple yes or no.

In this one-hour conversation, Caroline Hu Flexer (Khan Academy Kids) brings together three leading voices in early learning: Sal Khan, Founder & CEO of Khan Academy; Dr. Kathy Hirsh-Pasek, Professor of Psychology at Temple University and Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution; and Michelle Kang, CEO of NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children).

Together, they dig into the research behind screen time and child development, what "developmentally appropriate" technology actually looks like, how to distinguish intentional play-based tech from passive screen time, and what educators and administrators can do to reduce teacher burden without losing what matters most — the human relationship at the heart of early learning.

Sal Khan | Founder & CEO, Khan Academy

Sal Khan is the founder and CEO of Khan Academy, a nonprofit with the mission of providing a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere. He is also the founder of Schoolhouse.world, Khan Lab School and Khan World School, all nonprofits focused on making world class, personalized mastery education accessible.

Sal’s interest in education began while he was an undergraduate at MIT. He developed math software for children with ADHD and tutored fourth- and seventh-grade public school students in Boston. He holds three degrees from MIT and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Kathy Hirsh Pasek | Brookings Fellow & Author

Kathy Hirsh-Pasek, a Professor of Psychology at Temple University, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institute and a Visiting Professor at Oxford University, was declared a “scientific entrepreneur” from the American Association of Psychology. She examines the development of early language and literacy, the role of play in learning, and learning and technology.

The author of 18 books and hundreds of publications, she has won numerous awards in her field including being inducted into the National Academy of Education and the Association of Children’s Museum’s Best Friend to Kids Award. Vested in translating science for lay and professional audiences, her book Becoming Brilliant, released in 2016 was on the NYTimes Best Seller List in Education. Her Making Schools Work was released in late Fall of 2022 and her most recent book, Einstein Never Used Flashcards was released January 20, 2026.

Michelle Kang | CEO, NAEYC

Michelle serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), where she leads nearly 55,000 members in advancing highquality early learning. Leveraging her extensive business expertise and dedication to education, Michelle oversees initiatives that enhance educator support, quality standards, and professional growth within the field. Previously, Michelle was NAEYC’s Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer and held significant leadership positions at Bright Horizons, spearheading strategic partnerships for family-supportive educational services.

Her background as the eldest daughter of Korean immigrants informs her leadership style, emphasizing welcoming and accessible educational policies. In addition to her executive roles, Michelle is actively involved in volunteer work and mentorship, serving on various boards and contributing to initiatives that promote workforce development in education. She holds degrees from the College of William and Mary, the University of Virginia, and Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford. Michelle lives in Maryland with her family, continually inspired by the impact of early childhood education.

Caroline Hu Flexer | VP & Founder, Khan Academy Kids

Caroline Hu Flexer is the Vice President of Khan Academy Kids. She leads the team developing Khan Academy Kids, an educational program that is designed to inspire a lifetime of learning and discovery for children ages 2-8. It includes interactive, standards-aligned lessons across early literacy, language, math, and social emotional skills. Khan Academy Kids is used by millions of children in homes and classrooms around the world.

Prior to Khan Academy, Caroline was the CEO and Co-Founder of Duck Duck Moose which joined Khan Academy in 2016.  Duck Duck Moose is a creator of 21 award-winning educational apps for children that have been downloaded over 100 million times. Before Duck Duck Moose, Caroline worked in product management and as a design consultant at IDEO. 

Caroline has an AB in Architecture from Princeton, attended the Master in Architecture program at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, and has an MBA from Stanford.
