Lesson 2: Out-of-school programs: case studiesOut-of-school time case studies
Khan Academy can be a powerful tool for targeted remediation, tutoring, and enrichment. As the examples below illustrate, a wide variety of out-of-school time programs use KA for a wide variety or reasons.
ALearn (remediation for middle school, summer program)
ALearn’s MAP Plus program serves one hundred 7th grade students who are at or below their grade-level proficiency. Students participate in the program for 10 weeks. The blended instruction model combines Khan Academy and hands-on activities. ALearn also runs a summer program for 1,000 7th and 9th graders across more than 18 school districts and uses Khan Academy as a resource for instruction.
Boys & Girls Club of Sonoma Valley (afterschool program)
BGC Sonoma runs 6-week programs at two sites with 30 students at a time (15 at each site). Kids participate 3 time per week for 45 minute sessions. Khan Academy’s coaching features are used to track student progress, and BGC Sonoma works closely with teachers to determine where each of their students should focus. Awards are provided for participation, effort, and badges earned. At the end of each 6-week session, a party is held to celebrate.
Ikamva (afterschool program in South Africa)
Read more about Ikamva here.
IMC Chicago (volunteer-driven tutoring program)
Volunteers meet with local charter school students after school once per week for individual tutoring. The focus is preparing students for the ACT exam. Volunteer tutors work with students on ACT practice problems and then use Khan Academy to reinforce specific concepts. Volunteers commit to tutoring every other week for three months. Each student is paired with two employees, who trade off.
La Jolla Elementary (volunteer-run before-school program)
Parent Anna Glynne saw the school invest in another online math program, but that technology only provided content at a particular grade level, She found Khan Academy to be a viable, zero-cost option to supplement her child's curriculum. Anna then realized that other students who were either above or below grade level could benefit and obtained permission from the school to start a Khan Academy morning program. Each Wednesday at 8am, thirty 3rd-5th graders gather to use Khan Academy on iPads. Anna saw a need to help students and thought, “Hey, this is free - why not take advantage of it for our students?”

- Hi,
I work with an NGO into bridging literacy and digital divide by using ICT to equip children in rural communities. Please, where do I start from considering the set of children we work with? Thank you.(4 votes)- Try this, if you haven't found this already from the earlier answers:

- how can I get you as a touter(3 votes)
- We don't pair students with tutors, but you are more than welcome to ask anyone you know and trust to become your coach! They can follow the instructions here to create a coach account: https://www.khanacademy.org/coach-res/reference-for-coaches/how-to/a/setting-up-your-coach-account.(1 vote)
- I am new to this site, and have used it in my tutoring of math students.
I have a student leaving for summer vacation and mom wants us to have virtual class while school is out.
What will be the easiest approach, logistically.(2 votes) - Is it possible to use the coach function to create a group? We want to use KhanAcademy as family and compete with each other. So, that you can see the progress of your brothers and sisters. Now I created a class, however my own scores as coach cannot be seen by others.(1 vote)
- You can add yourself to your "Classroom"
First go to your dashboard, then select "coach" under "Community" on the left side navigation bar below "dashboard"
Then type in the code to add yourself to your class.
Hope this helps!(2 votes)
- How can children learn from this program? When I watch the videos they make no sense. Sometimes the videos don't even tell you what you are looking for, when the video is recommended for that subject.(1 vote)
- Many children and teens I've encountered with does experience a difference with Khan. You can comment on videos that make less sense and give feedback on spesifics and improvement you think is necessary. Negativity won't help anyone.(1 vote)
- Has anyone tried pairing students up according to ability, two students per computer, working under a shared login account for an entire term, alternating doing the exercises, watching videos together using two headsets with a y-adapter, and helping each other when they get stuck? Education needs to be more of a collaborative experience. In addition, this would take pressure off the teacher as the students would figure most things out together. Please email me at gary.friesen@ambassador-enterprises.com if you have any thoughts or experience with this approach.(1 vote)
- Is there a quick way to set up a learning path for a middle school student. I do not have the time to start from the beginning of the knowledge map, but I do want to be able to diagnose what gaps they need the biggest help in for remediation for the Texas 8th grade STAAR Math test coming up in 2 weeks.(1 vote)
- It would be nice if this could diagnose gaps and direct students to ways to improve in those areas.(1 vote)
- I am an adult education Math teacher at Atlanta Technical College and will use KA to monitor my students' progress towards readiness for passing the GED. I would like to correlate the applicable lessons on your site to the skills needed for testing in order to create a curriculum of sorts, such that for each GED Math subtopic I could assign a program. Is there a way to get your system to align with the goals of my instruction?(1 vote)
- I need resources for Basic English class that focuses on paper writing with sentence structure, punctuation and the general flow and organization of papers using different citation methods. Thank You(1 vote)
- Hello - I am using Khan Academy to help a student in our alternative high school program in Mass. Is there any kind of tutorial that reviews polynomial equations, e.g. "Wendy is making a custom sail for the regatta. If the height of the sail needs to be 6 feet less than twice the length of its base, and the area of the sail is 70 square feet, what will the height and length of the base be?" I am an English teacher, so I admit that I haven't looked at this kind of math in years. Thanks!(1 vote)
- I teach Grades 6,7,8 Low Cognitive Math Students. My perfect plan is to use Khan for summer practice as opposed to the standard Math Packet. How do I actually design the practice in each of my student's accounts to reflect what I would like them to focus on this summer? I need to present my plan to my administrators so they can see the benefits of Khan vs. a paper 50 question packet. Thanks in advance.(1 vote)
- I'd suggest creating a playlist of skills you'd like students to practice and/or recommending these skills to your students.
