Lesson 2: Monitoring progress towards masteryUsing Khan Academy’s mastery progress reports
How to access and use Khan Academy's mastery progress reports with students.
As a teacher, you can access progress reports for any Course mastery goals or skills students are working on. The Progress reports show the percentage of mastery completion at the course and unit levels.
Understanding the mastery progress reports
The Progress reports show a few key pieces of information for the class.
- Course progress: This is the total amount of mastery progress each student in the class has made toward overall course mastery. The progress percentage for each student is determined by the total number of mastery points the student has earned divided by the total number of mastery points available in the course. (For reference, each skill is worth 100 mastery points.)
- Unit progress: This is the total amount of mastery progress each student in the class has made toward overall unit mastery. The progress percentage for each student is determined by the total number of mastery points the student has earned divided by the total number of mastery points available in the unit.
- Median (shown at both the course and unit levels): This measurement reflects class mastery progress median for the given unit or course. This is determined by averaging the progress for all students in the class for the given unit or course.

Accessing mastery progress reports
First, navigate to the Teacher dashboard and select the class whose reports you want to view.
Then select the Progress tab under Course Mastery from the left side navigation to open the report seen below.
Note: You need to first assign a Course mastery goal to the class in order for the Progress tab to be accessible. See this article for more on setting Course mastery goals.
Move the cursor over the progress bars to bold the names of the specific students who have achieved that level of progress. This report also showcases the class median for course progress in a small circle, based on the progress of the entire class.
Lower on this page are the individual units of the course. Click on a single unit name to look closer at unit-level progress.
Similar to the Course level report, the Unit level report shows students’ current mastery progress across the entire unit.
Move the cursor over the progress bars to bold the names of the specific students who have achieved that level of progress. This report also showcases the class median for unit progress in a small circle.
If you’re looking for detailed information on class or student progress at the skill level, use Khan Academy’s Skills report to dive deeper into skill-level progress.
Note: Some teachers use the Course and Unit progress reports as a motivational tool with students. They project the Progress report onto a whiteboard or screen for the class to view. We recommend using the Hide students button in the top right to hide individual students’ names while still showing student and class progress.
To return student names to the report when you are done, click the Show students button in the top right.
