How to use Khan Academy's videos, articles, and problem sets for homework assignments
In this model, teachers use Khan Academy as a frequent source for homework assignments.
Grading homework assignments is faster and more convenient than traditional paper homework assignments. Students can complete Khan Academy homework assignments on computers or on mobile devices by downloading the most recent version of the Khan Academy app.
Variation 1: Exercises. Teachers assign Khan Academy exercises as homework. Students get instant feedback and additional explanations as needed while completing exercises.
Variation 2: Videos, articles and exercises. Teachers assign Khan Academy videos and articles primarily for before class. When students enter class, they are ready to discuss and practice the concepts covered in those resources. Teachers use this model to free up more class time for application and practice of topics.

Primarily outside of class, 2-3 times per week
What content is typically assigned:

- On-grade level content
What is the cadence for assignments?
Daily option: Assignments typically take about 30 minutes to complete. Assignments are intended for completion outside of class time.
Weekly option: Teachers may choose to assign Khan Academy resources once per week for students to complete throughout the week. Assignments are typically longer than the daily option and may take 60-90 minutes to complete.
How does a teacher choose the topics to assign?
Teachers either identify the aligned content for their current lesson, or create a custom assignment based on their student’s specific needs.
What does a teacher do with assignment reports?
- Before class begins on the day a homework assignment is due, the teacher browses completion of video and article assignments.
- Teacher may project the assignment reports for in-class review of the previous night’s homework.
Teacher also scans assignment report, looking for two things:
- Is there a group of students who did not meet the performance expectation of 70% correct who may need support during class?
- Are there problems in the exercise item bank with a low success rate that would be worthwhile to discuss during class?

- When I assign my students a video, many are experiencing a glitch wherein they watch the video but the assignment still lists as not done. Any way to prevent this?(14 votes)
- I am also having this problem. As an in class fix I just have my students write down the examples for homework and do a quick check at the beginning of class. Still it is not ideal.(4 votes)
- Is there a way to see a report of student names and their grade (% Correct) on the assigned material?(11 votes)
- If the student is a part of your class, which I am guessing they are since you can assign them work, then all you have to do is go to that class find the assignment and click the number marked by #/# those number will be the number of students who have completed the assignment over the # who are in your class. Then you can scroll through and look at each students grade. There is also an in depth class view as well that tell you the percents of the class who struggled or succeeded on specific problems.(2 votes)
- When I assign Khan for HW, I want to give a grade based on completion . . . knowing that they worked until the button said Show Summary instead of Next Question. Is there a quick and easy way for me to do that? I'm assuming the percentage shows how much they got correct, not how much they completed.(5 votes)
- Can students view ALL previous assignments assigned to them? I let students complete past due assignments and also let them revisit assigned exercises to increase their score. When students click on their "assignments" tab, only the upcoming assignments and most recent assignments are available. Is there a way for students to see these older assigned exercises (even months old in some cases)?(4 votes)
- I teach High School senior level Calculus. When I first started using this for homework I allowed students to complete the assignment as many times as necessary to gain 100%. I would use the data for the most missed questions and go over those in class. I also would look at the percentage of class completing the assignments and thought everything was going smoothly until I looked at the number of questions they were answering and the amount of time spent per question. Come to find out, students are simply guessing as fast as they can till they can get 3/4 or 4/4 spending about 3 seconds per question for 45 questions. Some will guess till they get 2 correct and then try hard on the third one to get 3/4. I have spoken to several students about this dishonesty but it would take too much time to check each student for each assignment since it means going into each student's profile, and searching for their progress to see the chart that shows their last 30 questions and how much time they spent per question. Unfortunately, students have taken this amazing learning tool and reduced it to point grabbing. I was giving credit for completing assignments, but now I'm thinking it isn't worth it and letting this just be a resource for students who care to learn. Any thoughts or feedback? What are others doing and is it working?(3 votes)
- Agreed! I have witnessed the same behaviors in Algebra II classes. I suggest one work-around: Assign to a level of completion of Mastery, which should weed out the point-grabbers; levels can decrease if you miss many problems, so just guessing has a negative impact after the practiced level is reached. One downside of this is the increased time to get to Mastery level. I think that there is still a minimum amount of time needed between practices for a skill to be marked as Mastered. This makes it nearly impossible to have an assignment Mastered in one night for homework.(3 votes)
- In the previous version, I was able to determine how many questions I wanted the students to complete. Now, with the new version, I am no loner able to assign the number of problems I want to give the students. Is there a way to change the settings?(4 votes)
