• Have you heard of the order of operations? Before you do subtracting, exponents, multiplication, etc. you first do the math in a parenthesis. For example: 9+(2x1) You would first do the 2x1 and then add the 9. Also, if you are solving a negative problem, sometimes parenthesis sort things out. For example: 8-(-9) If you see this: 8--9, you would probably think that it is asking you for 8-9.
• To turn a mixed number into an improper fraction, you would multiply the denominator by the whole number and then add the numerator. For instance, if you have the mixed number 4 1/2, you would multiply 2 by 4 and get eight, but then add the 1, leaving you with 9. The denominator stays the same, and your improper fraction would be 9/2.
