Adding up euro coins

- [Instructor] What we have here are some euro coins and if they were ours, it would be pretty fun to count them up to see how much money we have. So pause this video and see if you can figure that out before we work on it together. All right now let's work on this together and you can see we have a bunch of euro coins. This is a one cent, one cent, one cent. Then we have a couple of two cents. A five cent. Some ten cents, a twenty cent, a fifty cent. Then we have a full euro here. So this isn't one cent. One full euro is equal to 100 cents, let me write that down. One euro, one entire euro, one euro is equal to 100 cents and then here we have two euros so two euros would be equal to 200 cents. So what I'm going to do is add up everything in terms of euro cents and then we can think about how many full euros we have and then how many parts of euros which we could think of in terms of cents. All right, so we have one euro cent, one euro cent, one euro cent, so I could add those up. That's going to be one plus one plus one. Then we have two two euro cents. So these are going to be, I'm gonna put the two and a two. Then we have a five right over here. So it's going to be a five. Then we have a couple of tens. So we have a couple of tens so, that's one ten, that's a second ten. Then we have a 20 and I'm running out of colors, I guess I'll just use white for that. So then we have a 20 cent coin. Then we have a 50 cent coin. I'll do that in purple. Then we have a 50 cent coin and I'm almost running out of space. Then we have a one euro. So remember one entire euro is 100 euro cents. So I'm going to write 100 here. I'm going to think about everything in terms of euro cents. There's other ways that we could approach it, I'll talk about that in a second and then last but not least and definitely but not least, we have two euros which is the same thing as 200 euro cents and so now we can add up everything and what do we get? One plus one is two plus one is three plus two is five plus two is seven plus five is 12, write the two in the ones place and then the ten I could write as one ten. So we have one plus one plus one that's three plus two is five plus five is ten. That's ten tens, which you could also view as zero tens and one hundred and then we have one hundred, two hundred, four hundred. So you could say we have four hundred and two euro cents but remember, let me write it this way, you could say we have four hundred and two euro cents or you could say this is four hundred euro cents or 400 cents, I'll just write cents, we know we're dealing with euro in this video. 400 cents plus two cents. Now 400 cents, that's four full euros. So I can, instead of writing it that way, I could write this as four euro, four euro and two cents so plus two cents and the way that you would typically see this written is like this. So four euro, the symbol is this, some people would view it as like an E with these two lines into it. Four euro and then the two cents, the typical way to do it is you write a comma and then you wouldn't just write a two there because you can go all the way up to 99 here. So you would write a zero two. So this tells us that we have four euro and two cents or two euro cents. Now another way that you could of done this is that you could of added up all of the cents and then added three euro to that. So I encourage you to think about that cause you have one euro, two euro. So that's three euro and then if you added up all of the cents, you can pause the video to think about it, you would see that you would get 102 cents. So 102 cents is one euro and two cents and then you add that to your other three euro, you would get to the same place. I encourage you, pause the video, try that on your own.
