Leonardo: Anatomist - by Nature Video
Nature Video was invited to Windsor Castle to see some of Leonardo da Vinci's anatomical drawings. The drawings show that Leonardo did more than dabble in the sciences; he carried out experiments and made staggering medical discoveries which could have transformed the study of anatomy in Europe -- had they not languished unpublished for centuries. In this video, Senior Curator Martin Clayton shows us three of Leonardo's most intriguing anatomical studies.

- What time periode would be seen as the Renaissance time periode?(3 votes)
- The Renaissance time period is around the 14th century.(0 votes)
- What is the greatest quality about da Vinci that distinguished him from other people of the Renaissance?(1 vote)
- He was a sculptor, a painter, a scientist, an inventor, an architect, a musician, engineer, an astronomer, a writer, etc. He was probably one of the most diversely talented people ever to live. He is one of the most famous painters and one of the best. He was a genius, and made some of the most revolutionary inventions and theories in his time and without him it would be very difficult, or impossible, to draw, sculpt, and paint humans.(6 votes)

- how old was he when he was killed in china(1 vote)
- Was Vinci the greatest man that time(1 vote)
- He was absolutely a genius and a typical renaissance man. But I wouldn't say he was the greatest person of the era. There is for example Michelangelo, who had so many skills too. The problem with Leonardo was, that he had too many interest, and he was dealing with many things at the same time. That's why most of his works was unfinished. I think he would be much more succesful if he would have less interest. He had absolutely impact on art, for example he is the one, who invented the sfumato technique. Also for example, if his anatomy drawings would publicated in a book in his lifetime, that would make a great impact on the medicine, because the books people used in that time, were so much more incorrect, and full with miscconceptions.(3 votes)
- Why was anatomy a popular subject that interested people during the Renaissance?(1 vote)
- Artists in the Renaissance attempted to create more life-like interpretations of people. People also began to go against the Church back then and were able to disprove many old theories. "The anatomist strove to understand the
inner workings of the body, whether for public health, autopsy, or to prolong an execution. The artist desired to reproduce the most accurate, natural, and beautiful form by understanding what lay beneath and thus represent what was seen. In the end the artist may have been a major influence in the evolution of the art of anatomy. " (http://www.ucalgary.ca/uofc/Others/HOM/Dayspapers2001.pdf#page=92)

- What is da vinci best at? Drawing? Inventions? Science?(1 vote)
- Atthe speaker says that the drawing is based primarily on a dissection of a nearly 100 year old man, and refers the organs in the drawing as "his organs* Why then does the drawing have a uterus? 1:05(1 vote)
- The curator, Mr Clayton, states that the drawing is based primarily on an elderly male human. He also pointed out that some of the the anatomy was borrowed from other species. It seems that anatomical studies were a work in progress, like all human endeavors.(1 vote)
