Lesson 2: Out-of-school programs: case studiesUse case: correctional facilities
Students who find themselves in prisons, jails, and correctional facilities have varied and intermittent educational backgrounds. Correctional facilities can use Khan Academy to support a variety of programs, including credit recovery, GED preparation, and adult continuing education.
These facilities tend to be high-security environments with extremely limited Internet connectivity, if any. Below are examples of how institutions have addressed this challenge.
Idaho Correctional Facilities
KA Lite, an offline version of Khan Academy created by Learning Equality, is impacting learners in the Idaho Department of Correction. The first 20 prisoners using Khan Academy exercises offline all passed the math portion of their GED course—the first time that had ever happened.
Los Angeles County Jails
Students in LA County Jails can use Khan Academy during their time in a computer lab. Students have access to the Internet and can use all features of Khan Academy, and educators can use coach reports to analyze student progress and guide students in their learning. To allow students to use the internet, LA County Jails implemented strict firewalls to block almost all parts of the Internet except certain educational sites. These jails are also using a program that allows the facilitator to see all desktop screens at once as an extra security measure.
Santa Clara County Office of Education
Santa Clara is using Khan Academy with students in its correctional education programs. The site is especially useful since many students take part in these programs for short amounts of time and have weak foundations in math. Students use Khan Academy as a personalized resource to fill in their gaps, and teachers use it to supplement their instruction.
Washington Prisons
Instead of having full access to the Internet, inmates in Washington prisons use KA Lite, an offline version of Khan Academy created by Learning Equality.
Are you implementing Khan Academy in a correctional facility? We would love to hear your story. Email implementations@khanacademy.org.

- 8 months ago you mentioned here that you might have a GED prep course available soon, where is KA at on that?
A study program would very helpful. My local community college uses Khan as part of their GED class curriculum. But an independent study program would be much appreciated.
Hope it coming soon!(4 votes) - I'm considering recommending the use of the Academy for GED preparation at a Boston non-profit currently using a very basic, pencil-paper and tons of practice sheets (plus volunteers). Is it safe to suggest that the equivalent of a Khan Academy GED prep program would be to go at the "The Whole World of Math" path? I'm trying out the program, but can't yet tell what I would be proposing? ...followup...I just noticed I could try a Grade at a time approach, all the way to 12th...since it looks like the World of Math covers college level topics...(4 votes)
- I am teaching English to Orphans in Ukraine via skype. Can you suggest anything such as websites or teaching tips for teaching over the internet to children? Thank you.(3 votes)
- While we don't have English language content, we've been told by users that KA's content is being used in English to teach the language by having students watch the video in English and then asking them questions / discussing the video. We also offer subtitles (click on the "Options" button to the bottom right of the video and select subtitles - some videos have Ukranian https://www.khanacademy.org/math/arithmetic/addition-subtraction/basic_addition/v/basic-addition). Hope that helps!(3 votes)
- I am a teacher in an alternative high school. My students routinely fail the Math GED test because we have few Math resources other than Plato and the Steck Vaughn Prep books. Will there eventually be some GED Prep videos available that I can show in my classroom?(3 votes)
- I cant seem to pass the math part of the GED. I keep missing by 1 or 2 points, this is now my fourth time taking it. what should i study to pass it?(2 votes)
- If you go to GED.com and click on my scores, then click on the small blue 'view my results' after the test date. From there click on 'how can I score higher'. You will get a list of specific skills you need to review. Also if you have any of the books listed at the top it will even give you page numbers. You can type the name of the skill into the search box on Khan Academy and it will show you topics related to that skill. Good luck.(3 votes)
- Is there anything yet to help pass the GED Math ??
I have learn a Math from Great courses still can’t and I have learned so much and feel good about all I have learned. Never thought I would. But still back to the GED I guess it a never ending failing. My teacher said she couldn’t even do it and I thought and she trying to teach me I quit. I guess I will never be a nurse. So now I’m selling a LulaRoe clothing and it fun and I don’t feel like I never going to make it I’m doing and doing it good. Sad I have been CNA since I was 29 and now 57. I guess life has different plans. I know in my heart I could of been one of the best nurses I love to help and loved people and loved to learn always was right by the nurses learning all I could. So much for GED passing. I will just keep learning. No test needed to say I have learn I know I have.(3 votes) - i am looking for hol pre ged classes(2 votes)
