The Internet protocol suite

Only one protocol is used when a message is sent over the Internet. The computer picks the most appropriate protocol for the type of message being sent.

No protocols need to be followed in order to send a message over the Internet. The protocols are only necessary for additional functionality (such as encryption).

At least one protocol is used when a device sends a message over the Internet. The device can also use other protocols if necessary, but most of the time, one protocol is sufficient.

Multiple protocols are used when a message is sent over the Internet. The computer uses the stack of protocols that are most fitting for the type of message.
