How bad is the discrimination against international students in the US? I didn't realise the speaker was not from the US until she mentioned it - she has no non-US accent whatsoever. So if she already struggles with these problems, how bad would it be for people like myself who do have a noticeable accent?

In my experience, people may ask where you are from, and depending on where you are from, they might underestimate you. That sounds like a bad thing, but it could a very good thing. If they underestimate you, you have a much higher likely hood of surprising them and therefore impressing them. You might run into a little trouble here and there, but for the most part you shouldn't have much trouble.

Hey Garret. I know this might be a little late to answer, but typically students have up to 10 years to pay their college loans back but this can vary from college to college. Most colleges also offer financial aid to students so you can take the money to pay for tuition, book fees, etc. That's all and just make sure you can pay the loans back after you get a job! I am really confused in which college in which country to focus on to apply to. Any help is appreciated

I mean you should definitely consider the colleges in the country that you live in, wherever there might be. Some of the advantages of going to the university in your country is that you will have family support that you may not be able to get from foreign countries. But if you want to apply for colleges that are outside your country, you should do some research on the eligibility of that college, for instance if you want to go to a med school most of the colleges will not accept international students into their program. So my recommendation is that do not worry about the countries, bur rather make a list of the colleges that you want to go to and to what major, and after choosing what schools you want to go to, then you can go into researching specific colleges and their eligibility.

I think the best way is to research bunch of jobs and courses and see what best grabs your attention. The best way might be to go to youtube and look at basic videos of most the fields of jobs there are, and then continue from there.

You shouldn't. Having been a teacher I recommend that a person that is unsure of what they want to do go get a job first. Maybe work a few jobs. Wasting money on school without motivation is how many people get very deep into debt.

i actually had the same experience in high school when i came and wasn't familiar with the level of knowledge and cultural references in these schools or even interaction with students and teachers, which made it hard. however i got to adapt and learn as i spent time in these classes of subjects like history etc. i hope i get into college one day.

- One thing I learned in college is the ability to believe in yourself and to actually see that happen. Because when I moved here from Lebanon in 2005, I really just felt like I was not... like I would never achieve, because I didn't have the academic language to really write in class or analyze documents, because we never had practiced those skills. And so I always felt that I was a student that just wasn't smart enough, and that was never good enough for something, and I kind of lost the belief in myself that I would achieve, especially because I had things like my accent, or my... I didn't have the knowledge that other people had here, the cultural knowledge, the jokes, the references, this, that. So those were all really hard experiences moving in right in high school. When I went to college, and I chose the major of what I really was interested in, which was politics and history and international relations, all of a sudden, I thrived in those classes, and all of my experiences ended up becoming assets, and my language and my cultural difference ended up becoming something that aided me more, because I was able to bring other perspectives into the classroom discussions. And so all of a sudden I felt empowered to feel that I'm actually not a dumb student, and I know something.
