5th grade (U.S.)

Whether you are a robot, possum, magic unicorn, or just a normal human being, 5th grade is incredible! You will deepen your knowledge of the decimals that you were first exposed to in 4th grade. In particular, you'll learn to do all the arithmetic operations--addition, subtraction, multiplication, division--with them and really understand what a decimal represents. This will be complemented by building your fraction muscles where you'll learn to add, subtract, and multiply any fractions (and begin to divide them). On the measurement front, you'll explore volume (or how much "space" something takes up) and continue the unit conversion journey begun in 4th grade. 5th grade is also the first time that you get exposed to the fundamental concept of graphing points on a coordinate plane, and you'll get a very brief exposure to the concept of exponents (when exploring "powers" of 10)! Arithmetic operations

Let's begin our journey together in 5th grade with good ole fashioned arithmetic. Don't assume that this has to be boring...not at all! We're going to have fun as we learn about and practice adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing whole numbers and decimals. We know you're probably pretty comfortable with basic arithmetic, so we'll try to challenge you a little more in these tutorials!

Fractions

Hey...we know that fractions may not be your favorite thing. But these little guys already feel inferior to their whole number big brothers, so cut them some slack. Besides that, using fractions isn't too hard once you get the idea and start practicing. So let's go! Here begins our journey towards a thorough understanding of place value and decimals! Too often, students allow themselves to be intimated by decimals and fail to see that they are simply expressing a difference in the powers of ten. No worries! Just follow along with us. In addition to decimals, place value, and powers of 10, we'll look at regrouping, comparing and rounding decimals too.

If you think about it, we measure almost everything: time, distance, size, weight, volume, etc. Every THING can be measured. The question is, what unit of measurement is used and how is that unit constructed, compared, and converted? This last part is what we explore in these tutorials.

We're going to stick our toes into the proverbial waters of geometry! For those of you that are visual learners you'll love this topic. We'll examine all kinds of lines and shapes in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd dimensions. Topics we'll cover include the coordinate plane, plotting points, quadrilaterals, parallelograms, trapezoids, and rhombi (plural for a rhombus). Start your engines!

Writing expressions

In this tutorial, we will learn to describe situations using mathematical expressions, and consider the effect of using parentheses in the outcome of those expressions.

Number patterns
