Kairouan (from UNESCO)
Founded in 670, Kairouan flourished under the Aghlabid dynasty in the 9th century. Despite the transfer of the political capital to Tunis in the 12th century, Kairouan remained the Maghreb's principal holy city. Its rich architectural heritage includes the Great Mosque, with its marble and porphyry columns, and the 9th-century Mosque of the Three Gates.

The narrator says @0:18that Kairouan was "the first Islamic city in north Africa." But in central Tunisia, a muslim army would have to come either from Morocco and Algeria, or from Egypt and Libya, or by ship.
If they came by land, why didn't they have a city in one of the four north African countries I mentioned?

I think the narrator meant that Kairouan was the first Islamic city built by the Islamic empire, because while they were conquering they didn't always build cities, they conquered alreadly settled populations.(5 votes)
At1:41, we hear the speaker state that "...originally simple in design [Kairouan] built by the warlord Akbar, it was rebuilt as a great mosque a century later..."
What makes a mosque a "great" mosque versus a "regular" mosque?(1 vote)

God (Allah) also tells us that Makkah/Mecca was called bakkah in the Holy Qur'aan/Koran(1 vote)
