Conservation: Indian Jama
By the Victoria & Albert Museum. Follow our conservation team as they carefully clean and repair a magnificent 19th century jama – a style of garment worn by men in India for centuries. This impressive example is embellished with gold and pieces of jewel beetle-wing cases, and needed delicate conservation before it could be put on display. I start from the position that the museum's ownership of the Jama is legitimate and above board. There is no reason why it should be "returned to its native land." Proceeding from there, I ask: "Is it in better condition now, in the UK, than it would be in India?"(1 vote)
I would think so, but it could be that India does not have the sufficient tools to conserve it so it can be in the safest environment possible.(1 vote)
